How the vase heights are worked out

A stem suits a vase when it is about 2.5 to 3 times the vase height, so the arrangement rises 1.5 to 2 times the vase above the rim. Where a stem comes in more than one height, like the 30, 43 and 55 in (76, 110 and 140 cm) ficus branches, the range covers all of them. The arrangement guide explains it step by step.

Measuring your vase before ordering

Measure your vessel straight from the base to the top rim with a firm ruler or tape. To learn how to fit stems to your vase, read our arrangement guide.

If you prefer a finished bouquet, our flower arrangements arrive ready for a vase, like the crochet bouquets of 4 or 5 flowers at about 12 in (30 cm) tall. For single-variety displays, look at our standalone artificial flowers and fake plants, or the artificial trees for tall branches.

Deciding how many stems to buy

Vase height and mouth width dictate how many stems you need for a display:

  • For vases under 8 in (20 cm), use 3 to 5 stems.
  • For vases between 8 and 12 in (20 and 30 cm), choose 5 to 8 stems.
  • For vases over 12 in (30 cm), select 5 to 7 branches.

Wider vase openings require more stems so the arrangement stays upright.

Shaping and trimming stems safely

  1. Unpack each stem and straighten the flexible wire core to a natural line.
  2. Fold the lower wire base upwards first to test the finished height inside your vessel.
  3. Only trim the stem with wire cutters once you are sure of the length. Cutting the wire is permanent, and cut stems cannot be returned.

Caring for faux stems indoors

Keep silk and real-touch stems indoors, away from damp rooms, heat sources and prolonged direct sun. Dust leaves regularly with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Petals with a real-touch coating can also take a barely damp cloth. Do not submerge, steam or use solvents on any stem.
